US & Europe To Get Japanese White Playstation 3? | Finally, Your Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 Will Match!

by Dave Parrack

In news, or at least rumour, that is sure to please the multi-console owning people amongst you, it looks like the white Playstation 3, that up until now has been a Japanese exclusive, could be on the way to the US and Europe soon.

When the console came out in Japan, thousands of PS3 fans in other territories felt left out and wanted a piece of the white action. Don’t ask me why, it is just a colour after all. And it seems, after waiting a while, either to increase interest, or work out whether it would sell in sufficient numbers to warrant it, Sony has decided to release it around the world.

At the moment, this is just rumour based on recent filings with the FCC which includes a cover letter from Sony of Japan. It seems the documents, along with pictures of the unit, were filed way back in October of last year.

The documents included a media blackout along the lines of:

“[A request for] short-term confidentiality to avoid premature release of sensitive information prior to marketing or release of the product to the public.”

The white version of the PS3 was released in Japan last November, and has sold very well since. Whether that’s because the Japanese love uniformity, and want their consoles all to match is unknown, although for that to be possible it would mean Xbox 360 would actually have to be selling well in the country, and that’s not the case.

The white edition features the 40gb hard drive, and comes with one dual shock controller, which handily enough is also white. The release of the white PS3 doesn’t mean the black one is going anywhere though, with consumers instead being offered a choice between the two.

I can’t actually see this helping, or hindering for that matter, sales of Sony’s console, but I suppose choice is a good thing to have, even if the only only practical advantage to the whole thing is to allow people with OCD to have matching games consoles without the need for a can of white spray paint.
