Bejeweled Officially Takes Over the World

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Popcap cames has announced that Bejeweled has sold more than 25 million copies. That’s a lot of casual games for casual game players. PopCap co-founder Jason Kapalka had this to say about it, “Considering we tried to sell Bejeweled outright to more than one industry giant back in the early days of our company, and got no takers even after reducing our asking price to $60,000, this little game has done all right for itself.” All right for itself means they’ve made about 300,000 million dollars, much better than the 60,000 they were hoping to get.

A Lot of Fallout 3 Pics

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

If you’re interested in the development of Fallout 3 (and why shouldn’t you be?) then you’ve got to make sure and check out a whole slew of images that were taken by an Asian blogger who, I suppose, doesn’t care about breaking NDAs. There’s so many pictures that if you put them in a flipbook I bet it would be a crappily animated Fallout cartoon.

So far the game is looking damn good. It looks almost exactly like the old games, except rendered in glorious three dimensions. I’m really excited to see that you can target individual body parts like in the original (and even the sort of crappy Brotherhood of Steel). I also haven’t seen any rainbows yet, so you can rest your pitchforks you hardcore dirtbags. Oh wait, you can’t handle the change from 1995 to the present. Sorry.

Rumor: Rock Revolution Set List

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

Remember Konami’s horrendous drum set? If the rumored “leaked” set list is any indication, I don’t think Rock Band 1,2 or Guitar Hero: World Tour will have anything to worry about. The list of songs after the break:

Get Your Gears of War Chainsaw Action On

Monday, August 11th, 2008

Amazon.com has a pre-order up for Gears of War fans that may cause serious nerdgasms. For the low, low price of a hundred and thirty bucks, you could get your very own life size replica Lancer. The Lancer not only looks cool (and I mean that in the horrendously nerdy, only show this to your best friends who won’t judge you kind of cool), but it also has a removable clip, and the trigger makes the gun vibrate and make a chainsaw noise. To authenticate the play action of chainsawing an enemy in half, the side stock comes out like it does in the game, to give you that better slicing and dicing grip.

Good News for Call of Duty Fans

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

If you enjoyed the hell out Call of Duty 4 like most people are are a bit disappointed with the fact that they are going back to World War II for Call of Duty: World War, then the news that Call of Duty 4 developer Infinity Ward is getting a crack at the sixth Call of Duty Game should set your pants on fire. Apparently, Activision is going to switch between developers for each upcoming title. This way you can get a new game every year without burning out one studio.

This is good news for the forthcoming sixth Call of Duty game, but won’t a new game every single year kind of kill the series? I suppose if they keep changing the time period that it might help to keep gamers interested, but you can only retread the same ground so many times before it grows stale.

Ghost Busters First Impressions…

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Lucky blogs that have a lot of pull (or enough traffic) can get their hands on early copies of games like Kotaku. Their look at the upcoming Ghost Busters video game shows that the game is quite promising. Not only was their demo fun with busting ghosts, it wasn’t repetitive. One detail that I liked is that you have to wear the ghosts down before you can put them in the trap. I always wondered why it was so hard to put them in those things. The more you fight the ghosts and cause destruction, the less you get for your fee.

The one complaint that they seemed to have didn’t make much sense to me. You can’t have your PK meter out at the same time as your proton wand (the thing that does most of the busting work). This makes it more like the films though, since it requires both hands to operate those things. Anyway, I’m jazzed their impressions are positive so far.

Tera Patrick: Saints Row “Producer”

Friday, August 1st, 2008

Tera Patrick, best known (okay only known) as an adult film actress a.k.a pornstar, was hired to be a “special producer” for Saints Row 2. Basically, she was hired so morons like me would write about it to get you all excited for the game. Recently she was in a developer’s diary, which you can see above in that tiny ass window. Hey, sorry about that. I don’t make the blog only puke words onto it.

The Only Madden NFL ‘09 Article I’ll Ever Write

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

The title of this post is pretty self-explanatory, but if you absolutely need any more explanation, then I’ll put it thusly. I don’t like football. I don’t care for sports in general, but I really can’t make myself care about football or any games based on it. The last time I truly enjoyed a football game it was Tecmo Bowl for the N.E.S…. when it was brand new. I know this probably makes me less of a man or un-American or what have you, but there it is. Still, I ran across a news item relating to Madden NFL ‘09 that gave me pause.

According to Binge Gamer (and whoever they linked to), Madden NFL ‘09 is coming out for the XBox. Yes, the ORIGINAL FREAKING XBOX, the gigantic black box which is probably collecting dust under your bed. Call me crazy, but I was under the impression that nobody was making new games for that beast anymore, especially since the 360 has been out for several years and the original was pretty much retired by Microsoft. Yeah, I’ve bought a couple of Xbox games within the last year, but that was due to the fact that they were ultra cheap and I’m going to be playing them on the 360 when it supports them. I can’t imagine someone who still owns an original Xbox and is starving for brand new games, unless they were exceedingly poor and in that case buying the latest version of Madden should be one of the last things on their list of priorities.

Mortal Kombat 9: A Return to Form?

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

What’s the best way to generate interest in your tired, nearly dead franchise? To change it up and then return it to it’s roots. It worked for Coke with New Coke and it may just work for Mortal Kombat with the change up being Mortal Kombat vs. DC and a switch back to form with Mortal Kombat 9… although let’s all hope that it’s not as bad as new Coke.

Kotaku talked to series creater Ed Boon who didn’t really reveal anything at all other than the visions for a more gritty, totally kick ass Mortal Kombat are dancing in his head like some fantastically bloody ballerina. Perhaps the break from the standard Mortal Kombat is just what the series needed to get people to actually care again before putting us back into the world of ultra violence.

More Kombatants Announced at SDCC 08

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Four more characters are joining the ranks of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, according to the panel held at the San Diego Comic Con this last week. The characters from the DC Universe are the Joker and Green Lantern. No word on which Green Lantern it is yet, but I’m holding out hope that it’s Hal Jordan or Kyle Rayner. The characters from the Mortal Kombat stable that are returning are Jax and Kitana. Does anyone even like Jax? I don’t think I know anyone that really ever played as him.

Regardless, my buddy Shawn went to SDCC this year and he managed to get into a Mortal Kombat vs. DC party held at some bar there. He played MK vs. DC for about three hours and his report was that it was, “fucking awesome.” I think that you don’t really need much more than that for a preview.

New Wolfenstein Game on the Way

Sunday, July 13th, 2008

I loved the original Wolfenstein. Forget Doom, Wolfenstein was the first game that really got me into first person shooters. The good times didn’t end their either, Return to Castle Wolfenstein was a pretty fun trip and as one of the first XBox Live enabled games for the original Xbox I have a ton of fun memories associated with it. Now the latest issue of Game Informer has the announcement that a new Wolfenstein game is in the works. Awesome.

This new Wolfenstein’s details appear to be very similar to previous releases, except that maybe this time the hero gets to use some supernatural powers along with the usual array of standard guns. For a few more details head on over to Gaming Today.
