Star Trek MMO Details

by

A little awhile ago Cryptic announced that they were making a Star Trek MMO. There had been news that one had been in development for several years, but there weren’t that many concrete details. Well, Cryptic has a few if you’re a Star Trek fan.

Most MMOs start you off as a nobody, but Star Trek Online looks like it will be throwing you a bone as you begin as a Captain of a small Star Fleet or Klingon Empire ship. As you play (i.e. level) you’ll be able to get bigger vessels with more crew and you’ll earn higher ranks.

You will be able to select a race from one of the many Star Trek races, the AP mentions Gorn and Klingons. My guess that humans (duh) and Vulcans will be there for sure. In addition to these races it appears that players will have the ability to create a race as well. Who knows how dynamic their character creation is though, most Star Trek aliens have different forms of bumpy foreheads.

The game is set to take place in the Next Generation time frame, but in the crappiest version of Next Generation, that is, after the last horribly shitfest of a film.

There aren’t a lot of gameplay details given other than you’ll be able to “explore” the galaxy. Hopefully, they’ll have all kinds of boring Quasar probing activities for the ultra nerd fans who love the fake scientific aspect of the show. They are also promising lots of combat, one of the few times the shows are actually interesting.

Can a Star Trek MMO be successful in an overcrowded MMO market with the likes of World of Warcraft or will it turn into another Star Wars Galaxies?
