Angry Video Game Nerd vs. Superman 64

Sunday, July 13th, 2008

I’m surprised this didn’t happen sooner, but the Angry Video Game Nerd has finally tackled Superman 64. It’s an epic episode only because Superman 64 is one of the most reviled games in video game history.

The one thing that I have to ask is, when is flying through rings ever a good idea in games? I’m a fan of space based flight games and for some reason they’re always throwing some sort of stupid ring based levels in them. Enough already!

It’s funny to think that the game was so bad that when I worked for Wal-Mart and it was still kind of new, it was marked down to 2.00 bucks. Even then we could barely sell the damn thing. I remember a Dad picked it up for his son and I felt terrible ringing up the purchase.

Bill O’Reilly Goes Nuts on Battletoads

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

The following video was so hilarious that I just had to share it. If you don’t know him Bill O’Rielly is a right wing blow hard on Fox News. I don’t hate him and everything he stands for like most people, but I disagree with him 99% of the time. I think the only reason I sort of like him is that I used to watch the show Inside Edition obsessively when I was a kid. The following video was cut from some footage of the classic game Battle Toads and a now legendary leaked outtake from Inside Edition where Bill O’Reilly loses hit shit:

Now this is something I can relate to. I wasn’t the most skilled gamer as a kid and Battletoads was one of the most aggravatingly hard games I had ever played in my formative years, especially since I only ever played it with friends who continually beat me up (in the game of course).

Blogger Loses 16 Pounds In Six Weeks Using Wii Fit - His Mii Expresses Concerns For His Health!

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

When Wii Fit was released in the states last month, not only did it sell out within days, it also prompted a new wave of fitness freakery and another way of people to attempt to lose weight. While some will doubt the ability of what is essentially a video game, to help you lose weight, one blogger’s experience with the game is nothing but positive.

Kris Abel, a blogger writing for CTV, details his experience with the game in the six weeks since he bought it, and reviews the software at the same time.

The most interesting and intriguing part of his post is where he tells of his Wii Mii’s response to him reaching his weight-loss goal of 16 pounds in six months in just six weeks.

Rock Band Rejects My Wife

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

My wife isn’t a gamer in the least, but like most non-gamers she does enjoy Rock Band. After my hard drive busted on my 360, the annoying task of unlocking all the new songs and creating new rockers fell upon us. I created a guy named “Paul” since I’m the most uncreative gamer in the universe. The wife likes to come up with more creative names that are more “rockish” and this time she created a brand new rocker from scratch with the name Jett Midnight. Immediately upon creation, Rock Band told us that “Jett Midnight” wasn’t classy enough to be listed on Xbox Live. Huh? We couldn’t figure out why. Aside from the fact that it’s a little corny, we could think of nothing inappropriate about the name. Out of curiosity I quickly Googled “Jett Midnight” to see if it was a porn star or a stripper name, which would help explain this strange reaction by the game. I found nothing inappropriate and I’m left wondering what’s going on.

World Of Warcraft Addiction Worse Than Porn!

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Addiction of any kind is obviously a huge problem, and in these days when most of us can get hold of pretty much anything we desire, the range of addictions is growing massively.

It used to be that someone’s vice was sex, drugs, or drink, and that was about it. Now we have different forms of addiction, from porn, to the Internet, to gaming. However, out of those, I’d assume that gaming was the least serious, with less underlying reasons attached to it. But that’s not the case, at least according to Dr. Jerald Block, a psychiatrist in Portland, Oregon, who recently spoke to Boston.com about the prevalence of addiction to games such as World of Warcraft.

Block specializes in treating gamers who get so caught up in the world of warlocks and elves that they can’t then drag themselves away. And he views gaming addiction as more serious, and more complicated to treat than porn addiction.

The reasons he claims are to blame for this are two-fold. Firstly, porn addiction is more tolerated than gaming addiction. People expect porn to be a factor in a huge number of people’s lives. Sex is all around us, and so when someone gets addicted to one element of that, it’s not wholly unexpected.

Kid Uses Credit Card To Play Halo 3 On Xbox 360 - With Hookers!

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

How do you like to play Halo 3 on the Xbox 360? With friends? With lots of cold beers and snacks? How about with some prostitutes? The latter may seem to be a bit obtuse, but that is exactly how a 13 year old kid from Texas and his friends decided to play the game.

Ralph Hardy ordered an extra credit card in his father’s name, and then went on a $30,000 spending spree with a number of his friends. The credit card company sent out the card after the kid managed to answer a series of security questions correctly.

Hardy was caught after buying an Xbox 360, a load of games, and then booking in to a hotel room with his mates to play the games. After ordering snack food such as Dr Pepper, Fritos and Oreos, the boys asked the hotel management “where they could score some chicks and were willing to pay”.

The Best Of April Fools Day 2008 For Gamers

April Fools Day is always a torturous day for gamers, with a huge amount of fake or prank stories doing the rounds on the Internet. And this year has been no exception.

Here are some of the best from around the World Wide Web:

This YouTube video supposedly shows a mash-up between Assassins Creed and Metal Gear Solid 4. It’s rubbish of course, but at least we get to see some new gameplay footage from MGS4!

Blizzard announced a new hero class for World of Warcraft. Called the Bard class, this hero wields a plastic guitar and rocks their way through the game. This is in addition to the game coming to consoles, although as its only available for the Atari 2600 to start with, it’s not really that exciting news.

The Power Of Xbox 360 - It Can Create Babies!

Well, not quite on its own, but it can at least be the catalyst for a new baby to make its way in to the world.

A couple have met over Xbox Live, fallen in love, married, and now had their first baby together.

I’m sure this kind of thing has happened in PC gaming before, and also virtual world games such as Second Life and World of Warcraft, but I’ve never heard about it happening in quite the same way as this one occurred.

Stacy and Mike Figueroa met while playing Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Lockdown over the Xbox Live network. Hatred rather than love for each other was the first emotion to surface though, with the pair starting off as online enemies, in different factions of the game.

After months of shooting each other, they ended up becoming team-mates, and then a little after that, they fell in love.

Videogame Anagram Photoshops Challenge

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

In a strait up admittance that the idea is stolen from SomethingAwful’s well known “Photoshop Phriday” they do (which are well worth checking out btw), NeoGAF has a thread started taking images and photoshopping them using the letters from the game’s original name (.. “Anagram”). Below are just a sample of my favorites… some are greatness, some are odd, just make sure to hold out till the last one for childish humor at its best:

Lasagna Cat’s Final Fantasy & Garfield Mashup

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Just in case you haven’t seen this yet, here’s an awesome video featuring A. Actors playing out a horrible comic strip and B. the cast of Garfield battling Final Fantasy style. For those of you who are impatient or have an extreme case of ADD, just wait for the Final Fantasy goodness to hit right after the canned laughter starts.

Truly, a new classic. You’ve got to love all the details they added in those menu screens. This came to you via the folks at Fatal Farm who are responsible for dozens of other Garfield videos (accessible via their YouTube profile).

Adios, Boys and Girls

Ladies and Gents it pains me to say my farewells to 1PStart. I’ve been here only a short time, though I’ve been at Xbox 360 Rally (another 451 site) for just under a year. I will miss you guys, though you’re probably throwing a party, chanting “he’s leaving! Huzzah! Huzzah!”. If you do miss me, though, you can find me at my new home BingeGamer.net.

It’s been fun, and I hope to see y’all around.

P.S.: Qbix — E-mail me, dude. I’m still gonna get your GTA IV to ya.

NeoGAF’s Gaming Motivational Posters for 2007

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

Gaming forums NeoGAF have started up their gaming themed motivational posters for this year. Using a script on bighugelabs.com, users (and yourself too!) can create a motivational poster and post them in this thread. Keep an eye on the thread for more updates as users make them (and if you are not a member of NeoGAF, feel free to make one and leave it in the comments here, I love these things). For now, check after the break to see some of my favorite pics so far just off the first few pages:

nuke.jpg

This is the newest advertisement for the upcoming Game of the Year nominee, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. While I do find the idea of Kim Jong Il reviewing a video game to be rather funny, I have to express concern that by watching this, and showing you all, I may be helping spread the seed that will eventually lead to our nuclear demise.

But at least we’ll have played CoD4 by then.

JW’s Comprehensive List of People Ruining Online Gaming

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

Hello again, people. The first entry in this three-part series, where I took a good long look at some of the people who are ruining Halo 3, was a smashing success (and a good source of shits and giggles on my end). This second entry expands on that, looking at online gaming as a whole, pointing the finger of judgment at those who do all in their power to ruin the game for everyone else.

So sit back, get comfortable, and get your insults ready. If this is anything like last time, a whole lot of you are about to get really, really pissed.

JW’s Comprehensive List of People Who Are Ruining Halo 3

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

halo-3-online.jpg

Here I am, sitting in the computer lab at my college with an hour and a half before my next class. Since I have nothing better to do, and I am also a cheap, dirty $2 whore for website traffic, I figured I’d talk a bit about Halo 3’s online multiplayer. “Why?” you ask? Well, because I can and odds are everyone under the sun owns it by now.

In short: It’s awesome. That’s really it. I could just put up a stupid image of Master Chief quoting Lil John and call it a day, but no. I fear that I have to vent a bit. You see, through my time playing Halo 3, I’ve come across quite a few groups of people. From the creepy old men who tried to talk about sex acts with his ex until EVERYONE muted him, to ten year old children who have mouths more foul than Pig-Pen’s underwear drawer.

Now, there are, literally, hundreds of different categories for which to lump gamers into. This list deals exclusively with those that, I feel, taint the game for those of us who are on to have a good time. Those groups of players who, no matter what, you just can’t stand.

Douchebags.
