Watchmen Was Overpriced

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

watchmen_videogame_shot

Opinion was split on the Watchmen movie, but I really liked the flick and I was willing to give the game a shot. I know, the idea of a movie was sacrilege and the idea of a game based on the film was akin to raping babies, yet I went into it with an open mind. I played the whole first episode all the way through and I came away thinking two things. 1. It kind of sucked and 2. It was over priced at twenty bucks.

Well, I’m not the only one. The director of the Watchman video game is now admitting that Warner Brothers over priced the game. To be fair, it was their first foray into down loadable games so they didn’t know how to price it, but most gamers could tell you that something like that should have been fifteen dollars max. The director himself said, “”It should’ve been max $15; ideally $10.”" There wasn’t much to the game except punching and a few small extras thrown in. Otherwise, it was a pretty big waste of twenty bucks.

Supposedly the next episode will not feature as much content. In fact, it will have half the amount of content at a price of ten bucks. Oh goody, there’s even less game. I guess the one thing that really would improve the last one would have been if there had been less of it. Like none at all. That would have been great.

Halo Wars Limited Edition Impressions

halowarslimitededition

I recently picked up the Halo Wars limited edition for the rather high sum of eighty bucks the other night. Like I’ve said before, I’m not a big RTS fan, but I’m a huge Halo fan so this was a must buy. It didn’t hurt that I had Best Buy Reward Zone money and a gift card left over for Christmas, either.

I haven’t played the game long enough to really give a full review, but while it is fairly fun and I love, love the cut scenes it’s friggen frustrating that I can’t select or set aside squads to fight on more than one front. Also as an RTS newb, I get a bit of a panic attack when there’s too much going on at once. I’m more of a slow strategy thinker… damn you kids and your RTS games. In my day all combat took place in turns on hexagons!

Anyway, let’s take a look at the extras found in the limited edition.

Wondercon 2009

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Being a huge nerd, I love comic book conventions. I’m not really down with all the smelly nerds and the awkward conversations that arise when weirdos seem to want to talk to me for no reason, but I totally dig finding bargains and learning about new stuff. I had to video game related items come up during the convention that I thought I’d share here:

Sam and Max:

sam-max

It’s strange that just after I nerded out over the Sam and Max episodic games coming to Xbox Live Arcade that I actually managed to talk to the good folks at Telltale games about it. They didn’t give me a release date, but I will be reviewing the game here in the future.

They also asked me if I was interested in reviewing their Wallace and Gromit game coming out in Spring and I said yes. I love those guys, maybe not in the same way that I love Sam and Max, but Wallace and Gromit rule.

Fun Fact: I had a mouse named after Gromit.

Not so Fun Fact: The mouse died of mouse cancer.

Cyborg Mice

cyborgmice

Speaking of mice, the creator of Cyborg Mice was there. Cyborg Mice is a game coming out for Xbox Live Arcade and was programed with XNA. The game seemed fun for the five seconds I played it, but really interested me was the artwork of the mice they had on display. They had a cool shirt based on this image, so I bought it.

I’d encourage you to buy the game when it’s available. As a side note, I can’t imagine that the game would give them that much more profit over the t-shirt. I think this is a scheme just to get me to buy t-shirts. If so, it worked.

Final Fight: The Movie

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

Thank God for the interenet. Where would we be without it? We wouldn’t get to see any awesome fan movies based on video games, that’s for sure. This little video is a teaser for a movie based on Final Fight, which so far is not real, unless Chris R. Notarile of Blinky Productions gets his way.

I’ve got to say that a movie based on a mustachioed, wrestler Mayor sounds like gold. Throw in two buddies and have them slowly walk from left to write punching, kicking, and body slamming hundreds of opponents with the occasional break of fighting a mini-boss until they eventually take down the main villain, then you have a Oscar contender on your hands. I know what you’re say, doesn’t this sound like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button? Okay, you’re right but Final Fight came out in arcades way before the film version of Benjamin Button was released. The novelization was written prior to Final Fight, yes, but in the novel they walked from left to right. Clearly that’s an entirely different story right there.

By the way, Notarile has also filmed fan film type stuff for Powergirl and if he were to make any film based upon an established property, I’d kill to see a live action Powergirl film over any film based on a video game. I’m sure this will never happen as the amount of nudity that I’d demand in a Powergirl film would never allow it to be shown in theaters.
