New Releases: Week of October 1st, 2007

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

newreleasepgr.jpg

It’s that time of week again, where we remind you of all the new, kick ass games coming out in the next week. The game I’m most excited for this week is, without question, PGR4. Other games coming to retail shelves this week include Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, Spider-Man: Friend or Foe and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.

All in all, not a bad week for gaming.

Hayter will voice Snake in Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

ssbb.jpg

David Hayter is cool. In addition to voicing the ever badass Solid Snake, Hayter has written the screenplay for the first X-Men movie, and co-written screenplays for X2: X-Men United and the Scorpion King. Oh, and he’s Guyver, which is also awesome beyond comprehension. But, in the gaming world, Hayter is known almost exclusively for his role of Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid games.

On the YouTube page for his Metal Gear Solid 20th Anniversary video, Hayter has confirmed to a fan that he is indeed voicing Solid Snake in the next Super Smash Bros. title, Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Video games are turning women into men

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

women.jpg

You know, it’s scientifically proven that men and women think differently. Women ask for directions when they’re lost, whereas men examine trees to see which side the moss is growing on. This makes trying to understand women (or for women, men) damn near impossible. While we try to understand each other by reading books, blogs and Vogue, neither side has really been able to peg the other down.

So, obviously we need a compromise. So, instead of men trying to understand women, why not just turn women into men? Sounds good, I know, and do you know HOW you would do that?

Video games, of course.

Last Call for Call of Duty 4 Beta - Put Down Halo 3 For Just a Second

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

BETAOVER.jpg

Great news! Yesterday at 10am (PST) the Call of Duty Beta raised the cap for levels to a rank of 25.

So if you aren’t leveling up and taking on challenges, now is the pretty obvious time to get on it to get the extra weapons and crap (crap includes some cool perks and an upgraded weapon in each category.. read full details at FourZeroTwo’s page).
Bad news! Sunday the 30th (11:59pm) the Beta will be done :(

So what have we learned from this great experience? Fast action first person kicks ass. It may be an acquired taste for all you Halo gun battlers, but this Beta convinced me that this just could be the best way to have objective type games, everyone was very talkative, a big plus, I know you silent players are out there, but stick to deathmatch only games please. Anyways, it was fun, good job Infinity Ward.

JW’s Notes: Halo 3 Launch Recap!

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

halo3launchrecap.jpg

I want to first apologize if this comes off as a little choppy; I’m tired as hell. My feet are sore, my back aches, and I am currently staring at a replica of Master Chief’s head, in which lies a game I won’t be able to play because my 360 is, to my utter and eternal dismay, still bricked.

…how the fuck am I using words phrases like “eternal dismay” at this hour? Good Lord, I’m too smart for my own good.

Keep reading after the break for a breakdown of how the event went.

Mill o’ Rumour: Mortal Kombat and DC Comics unite?

Friday, September 28th, 2007

mksub.jpg

Here’s a rumor that made me just about wet myself. According to an IGN message board poster who supposedly has a “best friend” who works at Midway, the next Mortal Kombat title may be, indeed, “Mortak Kombat vs. DC Comics”.

The poster went on to say that the game would feature ten classic MK characters, and ten DC superheroes that included the likes of Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, & The Flash. Since DC doesn’t want to see their heroes die, he continues, the game will feature no fatalities and will be rated T for Teen.

…I’m keeping this a rumor for two reasons. One, I don’t tend to trust IGN’s message board posters. Two, even if this were official and true, I would still mark this a rumor for simple ease of mind. I have a hard time believing that Ed Boon would allow his baby, Mortal Kombat, to be raped of everything that fans love about the series just for the opporitunity to beat up Aquaman.

Besides, I can tell you for a FACT that if you had a fighting game where you could have Sub-Zero rip Superman’s head off, people would cream themselves.

FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage is morbidly sexy

Friday, September 28th, 2007

The FlatOut series has been known for it’s rather unique minigames. After all, how often do you get to use the driver as a projectile to go bowling? The latest entry in the FlatOut series, FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage looks to continue that tradition, as this new video shows.

…is it wrong to think that’s somehow sexy? Not like “wow, that’s hot” sexy, but more of a “wow, that’s fuckin’ cool” sexy?

Halo 3 sells 45,000 in Japan

Friday, September 28th, 2007

halo3japan.jpg

Enterbrain, a research company from Japan, has reported on this beautiful Friday morning that Halo 3, which was released in Japan yesterday, sold 45,000 copies.

When you consider that Blue Dragon, the highest selling Xbox 360 title in the land of the rising sun, sold 83,000 it’s first week, I’d say Halo 3 may become a moderate success over there.

Baldur’s Gate II + Expansion: $9.97

Friday, September 28th, 2007

bgate.jpg

Baldur’s Gate II is, arguably, the greatest PC RPG ever. Hell, even now, seven-plus years after it’s release, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a RPG fan who won’t give props to this early entry from BioWare.

Yeah, I said BioWare. I thought that’d get your attention. Before BioWare came to console prominence with both Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire, they were known for their deep, engaging RPGs. Namely, Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights. But that’s neither here or there.

If you haven’t played their classic Baldur’s Gate II yet, now is the time. You can get both the original game, Shadows of Amn, and the expansion pack, Throne of Bhaal, for a measley $9.97.

Do it. Now. Or else you’re supporting the terrorists.

15 NEW Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles Screenshots

Friday, September 28th, 2007

reuc-banner.jpg

Check these brand new Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles screenshots out that have been released straight from Capcom. With the obvious exception of the FPS control scheme where you use the Wiimote to aim and shoot, it looks like it may play a lot like the older, pre-RE4 games.

At least menu wise, in any case.

iRiver looking to enter the handheld market

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

It seems a little known company called iRiver wants in on the handheld console market, and they’re making quite a splash with their G10 WiBro handheld system.

Not much is known about the system at this point, however it has been revealed by Engadget that the G10 will run Windows CE 5, will come in both 4GB and 8GB units, will include a a rather large 800×480 screen, and the WiBro connection will give you access to iRiver music and movie services.

While it’s far too early to tell, it certainly sounds like this is what the PSP wanted to be when it launched. So now the question is: Will this become the third viable handheld, or just another Gizmondo or Zodiac?

GameStop too successful for its own good?

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

gamestop.gif

GameStop’s shares took a rather noticable hit today after analyst Ben Schachter (is he, like, the stock market version of Michael Pachter, who himself is the gaming version of Mel Kiper?) downgeaded the company’s stock from ‘buy’ to ‘neutral’. Considering GameStop is set to sell two MILLION copies of Halo 3 this month alone, what could drive someone to actually downgrade GameStop’s stock?

Apparently, they’re too successful.

Quoting an Associated Press article, Schacter rationalized the downgrade by saying GameStop would struggle to surpass shareholder expectations because people are just too damned psyched about the gaming market.

Making things even more confusing (for me, at least), Schacter then went on to raise the price target from $56 to $65.

I’m all kinds of confused.

Mercury News writer accuses Microsoft of Bribery

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

halo-3-bribe.jpg

On the latest episode of “Dean and Nooch”, San Jose Mercury News writer Dean Takahashi had some choice news regarding a $800 swag bag he received, calling the swag bag a “bribe” and saying he’ll send it back in it’s entirety.

In the bag that Takahashi received was:

  • Halo 3 Legendary Edition
  • Halo 3 Xbox 360
  • Two Halo 3 Xbox 360 controllers
  • First Aid Kid
  • MRE
  • Halo 3 duffel
  • Watch the video after the break.

GameTrailers Review: Medal of Honor: Airborne

    Thursday, September 27th, 2007

GameTrailers has posted their review of the latest entry in the WWII shooter franchise that we have to blame for starting the endless stream of WWII shooters, Medal of Honor: Airborne.

While the review is fairly positive, I’ve gone on record saying that unless it has Michael Corleone as an unlockable character, I refuse to fight my way through Italy yet again. The US has been in countless military battles, people — pick one that DOESN’T start with “World War”.

lolcat returns to advertise Geometry Wars: Galaxies

    Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Who loves lolcat? If you raised your hand, shoot yourself. The silly internet fad has been dead for some time, but apparently no one at Vivendi has gotten the memo, as they’ve revived the lolcat to help advertise Geometry Wars: Galaxies.

I can imagine the guy who came up with this. Some fifty-sixty year-old lifetime suit, sitting behind a desk thinking “this is what the children enjoy”. …I hate people like that.

My personal favorite is “WHA R Wii PLAYUN, DOODZ?”. I assume that’s my favorite because I didn’t black out in a fit of passive rage after reading it.

Geometry Wars: Galaxies itself will be released for the Wii this November, and unlike these ads… it won’t suck.
