GDC 08 - Microsoft Keynote Cliffnotes

by

Game Developers Conference 08Probably one of the most notable presentations at this years Game Developers Conference is Microsoft’s Keynote. Without Sony or Nintendo doing personal presentations themselves, this left Microsoft with a pretty easy “win” if you want to fuel the console wars fires. Though no “Free Xbox Live” was to be seen, some pretty damn big announcements have been made, including a surprise title coming out this year that had not been previously announced, read on for the quickest notes on the keynote ever:

  • Gears Of War 2 = November 2008!!! Though this was announced a little before the keynote, it seems that a PR team outside of their North America staff let this slip out.
  • Videogames are now bigger than the music industry in revenue terms, confirmed.
  • XBLA getting XNA’s user created games to us (More on that here)
  • XNA created games coming to Zune *snore*
  • New Unreal Engine updates are shown. (Over 100 Locusts on screen!)
  • Ninja Gaiden 2 taking a page right out of the new Halo 3 playbook, by adding a theater/record option (which all games should be doing from now on). Ninja Gaiden = June 3rd.
  • Fable 2 will have an XBLA game that will let you raise money for your character for the full game. Co-op available throughout the game.
  • “Gears 2 is going to be bigger, better, and far more badass in every way.” - CliffyB
  • Told you those were some quick notes! Honestly though, read all the liveblogging from this event you want, but it comes down to the above announcements as the whole reason why people attended this event. Pictures and video coming very soon.
