Nintendo Profits Rise Massively On Strength Of Wii & DS Sales | Upping Production To Stop Shortages

Nintendo are having a good year. That’s a slight understatement but it’s the main thrust of the latest press release to come from the company’s headquarters, as it reports a massive surge in profits for the last twelve months.

Net profit rose 47.7% to a record high over the last fiscal year, after the phenomenal success of the Wii and DS, both of which have exceeded expectations, and beaten all rivals in their field.

The net profit for the Nintendo group as a whole was ¥257.34 billion, or $2.5 billion. So just a slightly successful year for the Kyoto, Japan based company then.

The videogames industry as a whole has risen year on year, and continued to rise despite fears of a worldwide recession. But Nintendo has been the biggest winner out of everyone, with 18.6 million units of the Wii sold worldwide over the past year. 30.3 million units of the DS were sold in the same time frame.

Nintendo isn’t planning on slowing down either, with company president Satoru Iwata revealing plans to increase the production rate of the Wii in the summer from 1.8 million to 2.4 million units a month. This should ensure the shortages which have continued long after expected in the USA come to an end at last.

Nintendo also expects sales of the Wii to carry on rising, despite fears from some industry analysts that demand may peak soon, with anyone who wants a Wii having already got one. Nintendo is obviously hoping big releases like last month’s Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and the forthcoming Wii Fit will keep casual gamers interested.

Nintendo are right at the top of it’s game at the moment, with Sony and Microsoft having to scrabble around for the scraps. Whether that sort of success can continue remains to be soon, as the Playstation 3 looks on course to build some momentum in 2008.
