Why Does My Xbox 360 Lockup?

This was my big question on Friday and I spent many hours talking to various tech people from Microsoft about it. I was real curious as to why my Xbox 360 was freezing up and I’ve only had it for less than a week. I had instant flashbacks in my mind to my original Xbox and those moronic “clean disc errors that would pop up over and over and over again. I recall sometimes having to load a game up to a dozen times for it to take. That wasn’t just a random problem with my unit either. It happened with both of the original Xbox units I owned. Nearly every one of my friends had the same issues.
Now that this was happening again to the new system, I felt like screaming “noooooooooooooooo like Vader in Episode III. Fortunately I calmed down and realized there had to be a logical explanation for all of this. So after talking with several techs, I discovered that it was the game. Elder Scrolls IV takes a heavy toll on the 360 cache. Of course Microsoft in all of their infinite wisdom doesn’t have any sort of menu feature to clear the cache. I was instructed by several of the techs to hold down “A on your controller as the game is loading and that clears the cache.
Apparently it works, because after I tried it there were no more lockups. I had also heard rumors from some of my friends that sometimes the patches for games can cause issues. I can’t recommend this method, but the guys at gaming.hexus.net discovered a longer code you can punch in on the dashboard that not only will completely clear the cache, but it also removes all game patch files. They recommend you clear the cache every 20 hours of game-play particularly with certain titles such as Oblivion which had a nasty history of crashing systems.
