VoIP Heads To PS3… But At What Cost?

When you compare the PS3 and Xbox 360’s online services, one thing the PS3 has over the Xbox 360’s service is the tag price. If you read any internet message board flame war between the two consoles, that is one thing that is always brought up. A free online service tastes so much sweeter than one for $50/year.
And that free service is about to taste a lot sweeter thanks to Jajah. Jajah is soon going to allow PS3 owners VoIP services so you can chat with fellow PS3 owners through their service. The catch is the service won’t be fully integrated into the PS3. Instead, players will have to visit the Jajah website through the PS3’s internet browser in order to use the service.
Even though the idea of having to visit Jajah’s website in order to use the VoIP service may deter the majority of gamers who are too lazy to even manually turn on their console, it still is a step in the right direction and will really enrich the already pretty solid online service that the Playstation 3 offers.

Tycho said it best:
I can’t speak for Gabe’s competitive “stable” but at any given moment I’ve got thirty or so people on and ready for games, which must have been their fantasy when they created the service to begin with. I have positive experiences with it, but on the old list I often got the impression that while we were all in the same room, we were each facing different walls.
I must stress that Playstation 3 owners should take no succor from that statement. By comparison, your friends aren’t just facing different walls - they exist in a parallel fucking dimension. This is, of course, assuming that the developer managed to patch in a social component. I’m sick of people claiming parity between the online offerings of these systems so that they can appear above the fray. One of them is awesome, and one of them is dogshit. I don’t know why they should ever improve it if you fuckers have already given them the Gold Star.

Visit Jajah ? You mean this ”free” service won’t have any ads on it ? I call bullpuckey on that ! I may pay 50$ a year, but I can chat with a friend instantly, and don’t have to look at a bunch of ads on another website first. You can pay in dollars, or you can pay in advertisers time. Your choice (or you’re for BB).
