Virtual Console Releases - 3/19/07 [Update]

Last week’s virtual console releases weren’t as big as all of us would have hoped. And this week really isn’t any better. Here’s what you can expect to show up today on the virtual console:
- Splatterhouse (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points)
- Beyond Oasis (Sega Genesis, 1 player, 800 Wii Points)
- Excitebike™ (NES®, 1 player, 500 Wii Points)
Splatterhouse was a great game back in the day. I mean, the idea of playing a character that’s similar to Mike Myers was so awesome. And what can I say about Beyond Oasis….no, I’m asking you, has anyone ever heard of this game enough to justify spending 800 Wii points for it?
Yep, it seems like another stellar week in the virtual console.
[Update: Added Excitebike to the list since Nintendo finally got off their asses and released the press release out at 2pm. Thanks Nintendo...thanks a lot]
WII-KLY UPDATE: THREE NEW CLASSIC GAMES ANNOUNCED FOR WII SHOP CHANNEL
March 19, 2007
Today Nintendo adds three new classic games to the popular Wiiâ„¢ video game system’s Wii Shop Channel. The games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the channel every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Pointsâ„¢ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week’s new games are:
Excitebike™ (NES®, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): Face crazy curves, hairpin turns, and daredevil jumps as you race toward the checkered flag and the Excitebike championship. Race against the clock or challenge an opponent. You must keep your bearings as you fly through the air and avoid getting clipped by other racers. Stay cool under pressure or your bike will overheat. If you get tired of racing on the circuit, create your own course in Design Mode. There you have access to all the ramps, mounds, bridges, and other obstacles Excitebike has to offer.
Beyond Oasisâ„¢ (Sega Genesis, 1 player, 800 Wii Points): You are Prince Ali, who has discovered a buried gold armlet. This armlet once belonged to a wizard who waged a long war against the evil wielder of a silver armlet. The silver armlet was used to create chaos and destruction, while the gold armlet had the power to summon four spirits: the water spirit “Dytto,” the fire spirit “Efreet,” the shadow spirit “Shade,” and the plant spirit “Bow.” To stop the person who first discovered the ancient silver armlet and is again using it for evil, Prince Ali travels the land of Oasis, gradually acquiring the ability to summon the four spirits. Use your wits and speed to claim the silver armlet!
SPLATTERHOUSEâ„¢ (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): Rick and Jennifer, both parapsychology students at the local university, are visiting West Mansion, site of the research lab where the famed Dr. West conducted some of his most gruesome experiments. A sudden storm forces them to find shelter inside the mansion. Once inside, they are attacked by monsters. Jennifer is kidnapped and Rick is knocked unconscious. Hours later, Rick awakes to find himself covered in blood, with the Terror Mask stuck to his face. His only hope is to depend on the ancient powers of the mask to give him the strength and courage to find Jennifer. Now Rick’s fight has begun! Splatter your way through 7 stages of side-scrolling horror action. Armed with cleavers and shotguns, Rick must fight his way through the monsters of West Mansion and defeat the bosses at the end of every stage. The creepy music, gruesome monsters, gory action and shocking events leading up to the finale will keep you on the edge of your seat!

Totally not worth 8 bucks! They should only bring out 8+ dollar prices for the classics. Everything else should be 3-7 dollars imo.

The trouble with most VC games is that we remember them with such fondness… Then we download them and it crushes our childhoods.
Some games just don’t stand up to time.

I definately remember Splatterhouse and it was a classic for me. But I am gonna pass on the 8 bucks to buy it. What I am waiting for is Punch Out though.

SSJ i loved Splatterhouse myself, but i’m not sure if it’s a timeless game you know?

Apparently Excitebike is available this week as well, and just isn’t in the new releases. I’m verifying as we speak.

Kezins: Bonk has been out for a long time for the VC.

Can some tell me where the “hairpin turns” are in ExciteBike?
March 19th, 2007 at 2:19 pm
KB yeah i know.. i want all the sequels etc
March 19th, 2007 at 2:26 pm
Fair enough,
By the way, has anyone played Beyond Oasis? I like the nice plot summary and all but that doesnt really mean squat.
March 19th, 2007 at 4:38 pm
Beyond Oasis is one of the best Genesis games ever released. Everything about that game is good. 8 dollars is a frickin’ bargain for a game that was WAY ahead of it’s time.

actually I played beyond oasis way back when, im 21 so way back when doesnt really count…but the game kicked a lot of ass, i remember playing a puzzle that was actually quite complex and enjoyable and using my plant guy to help solve it. as for spending near 10$ on it, judgement call a game when i was 10 is cool…but like some people have said its tough to say if its “timeless” like a mario kart 64.
take that for what it is from a guy who is pretending to be charles barkley….
March 19th, 2007 at 8:47 pm
Aww I remember Bonk! That lil caveman with the huge forehead! I always wanted to play that! Splatter house though. Ehhhh not so much? What is that?
March 19th, 2007 at 11:09 pm
It’s basically Double Dragon meets Jason.

Beyond Oasis was basically Sega’s answer to the zelda series from the nintendo.
The graphics were good, and some of the boss fights were memorable (esp. the final boss). I remember being highly annoyed that any other weapons other then your puny dagger, were consumables, meaning after a certain amount of contact strikes the weapon would break and disappear from your inventory.
Ok game, but honestly, if you thirst for such a gaming experience, your much better off downloading Zelda: A link to the past from VC. Better gameplay, better story, overall much more engaging then Beyond Oasis.
However if you already have a link to the past, then maybe give Beyond Oasis a try. Not a spectacular game IMHO though.

This is actually one of the better VC updates in recent memory. Splatterhouse is a personal favorite, and Beyond Oasis is absolutely AWESOME (used to play it all the time on my Nomad). It’s basically an action RPG a la Zelda with a kind of Arabian Nights setting. I prefer the Saturn sequel/prequel Legend of Oasis, but this one is good. I’ll be downloading these two for sure…I love seeing the more obscure titles being released, especially the TurboGrafX-16 ones.

If they add Rock and Roll Racing or Uniracers anytime soon, consider me sold.
March 20th, 2007 at 10:47 pm
ExciteBike waqs cool, but I have never even heard of those other games…
March 25th, 2007 at 9:14 pm
Like I said before….WHERE THE HELL IS PUNCH OUT!!!
April 27th, 2007 at 12:22 pm
Everybody say that Beyond Oasis is like Zelda, but there’s no similarity other than the similar camera view and genre. Beyond Oasis is all about fighting and puzzles (mostly fighting), and has a ton of weaponry and combat moves a la fighting games. Zelda is much more simplistic and is mainly about adventuring.
