Top 5 games of 2007: Wii

If you are like most Wii owners, your Wii is collecting dust. While there have been a few releases in the past few weeks, the outlook for the average Wii owner seems pretty dire. So now that Super Paper Mario has been released, what other games can Wii owners look forward to? That is the question we set out to ask, in this edition of Top 5 games of 2007. Check below to see what exciting games lay in store for the Nintendo faithful.

The Draw:
This game is being developed by Goichi Suda, the acclaimed creator of the KILLER 7 series. Intense swordplay, using the motion-sensing abilities of the Wii controller, will bring the action to a whole new level. With a cell-shaded, “punk” inspired world, the backdrop promises something that will be fresh and exciting.
The Rake:
While it is refreshing to see a mature game on the Wii, I can’t help but be a little skeptical. The entire experience of a game like this is based on the ease of the controls. If the Wii-mote proves to be too unreliable (as proven in Red Steel) then it will kill the fun-factor of this game. While the trailer promises some interesting control mechanics, (shake the Wii-mote up and down to fill your power meter?) we can hope that Goichi Suda will continue his track record of making quality games.

The Draw:
MySims promises to be just as crazy addictive as it’s PC counterpart. The game is centered around on the player’s ability to customize all aspects of their Sims life. Create a house, design some furniture, the possibilities seem limitless.
The Rake:
It seems the game is on track to be a joy to play. The only negative aspect is that it will probably steal your girlfriend from you. Also, good luck trying to explain to your buddies why your Sim has flowers in her hair.

The Draw:
Metroid Prime comes to the Wii in Metroid Prime: Corruption. Enhanced visuals, a new story, and new special abilities promise to make this Metroid the most ambitious yet. Using the Wii-mote instead of the classic analog stick, Metroid Prime: Corruption sets the stage to change the way we play first person shooters forever.
The Rake:
This is another example of how proper control mechanics can destroy a game. Early reports of sketchy Wii-mote sensitivity issues abound. While the track record would prove otherwise, there is also a chance that the Metroid Prime gameplay may have gone stale by this time. I still hold high hopes for this one, and I hope Nintendo can get the control issues fixed in time.

The Draw:
The next major game in the Mario franchise. Nintendo has put a new twist on the old-school Mario gameplay, promising to make this one of the best titles in years. Explore crazy worlds, fly across the stars, and face brand new challenges never seen before.
The Rake:
It’s hard to find anything to be skeptical about. Will it be better than Mario 64? It’s hard to say, but it looks like it might actually be. Definitely promises to be one of the best looking games on the Wii, and I’m sure will be a system-seller for many Mario fans.

The Draw:
The third addition to the insanely popular Smash Brothers series. Improved graphics, new characters,(SNAKE!) and all new environments promise to deliver more smashing goodness. It was hard to choose this over Super Mario Galaxy, but if the amount of copies that Smash Bros. sold for the Gamecube is any indication, this game is going to go supernova.
The Rake:
There is really nothing to say. It doesn’t look like they have changed much in the way of gameplay mechanics, which some may see as a negative. Also, there is no usage of motion-controlled actions in the game. Some may see that as a negative, but for this sort of fighting game, it may be the correct choice.
Conclusion:
So there you have it. Looks like Wii owners have a lot to look forward to. Join us next time, when we go over the Top 5 games of 2007 for the Xbox360.

People are still saying June for SSBB? Not a snowball’s chance in Hell. Not happening.
Then again, it will (almost) certainly be worth the wait.
