Team Fortress 2: New Details

The story behind Team Fortress 2 is a sordid one. It appeared at E3 in 1999, where it received numerous awards for innovation and technical achievement. Years passed. We heard no new information from Valve, and quickly realized that the game may never be released. Then, new game details emerged! A whole new look to the Team Fortress franchise! It was going to be packaged with Episode 2 and Portal! All of a sudden, it seemed that this game was once again in our grasp! Months passed. Delay after countless delay. When would we ever get to play this game?
Finally, it looks like they have set a timetable. Doug Lombardi and Robin Walker recently did an interview with IGN where they announced their plans for a “September-ish” release. It may not be an actual date, but it’s a much closer estimate than anything we have heard before.
Other details in the article include:
- The Xbox360 version of the game will be able to play with it’s PC counterpart over Xbox Live.
- The Playstation 3 version of the game will only be able to play against other Playstation 3s.
- The initial release will not include every platform. The PC and Xbox versions will be first, and the PS3 shortly after.
- The max player count in a multi-player game for the PC will be 24. That count will be reduced on the consoles to 16 players.
It’s all very positive news. I just hope Valve can make it worth the wait.
