Sony admits lack of software is a problem – announces 380 new games in the works for PS3
A prolonged slump in NPD showings for the PS3 in April has prompted Sony to publicly admit to their lack of software. The main problem is that the number of new games being released has been lagging behind the demand. However, it appears that patience is the name of the game on this one. . .
According to Rueter, Sony has a huge number of new games slated for release this fiscal year in order to pick up the slack. According to Sony president Kaz Hirai, 380 new games (for the PS3) will be released between now and the end of the 2007 fiscal year in March 2008. 200 of these will be boxed retail games and 180 would be download only titles for the Play Station network.
Hirai also claims that Sony is working on the marketing for these games with the publishers in order to make sure that new games are released swiftly and in large numbers. If the article is to be believed, 60 retail releases and 50PSN title currently exist for the PS3, but the PSN number is likely inaccurate even if one includes only PS1 and games for Japan only in the list. Furthermore, the numbers are only depicting new releases between now and the end of the fiscal year, and doesn’t really show the overall situation for what it is.
Big words from Sony – whether or not these promises will materialize into something concrete is yet to be seen.
