Sequel To Starcraft To Be An MMO, Not RTS[Update]
It was previously reported that Blizzard is indeed working on a new Starcraft title. It was assumed that the game was going to be a sequel to the original Starcraft and be another RTS, but reports are coming in that isn’t the case.
According to CVG and it’s “well placed US sources”, the next installment of Starcraft is going to be an MMO and not an RTS as originally assumed and will be unveiled on May 19th.
Blizzard having both World of Warcraft and the Starcraft MMO means huge bucks for them. World of Warcraft is the most popular MMO on the planet as of now, and if Blizzard does pursue the Starcraft MMO, then they will inevitably rule the MMO world. It would be interesting to see how many subscribers migrate over to the Starcraft MMO from World of Warcraft in order to get the Blizzard MMO feeling, while getting fresh content and a completely different world than Warcraft’s.
May 19th just got a lot more important to the world of gaming. Make sure it’s marked on your calendars folks.
[Update: It seems Blizzard has squashed this rumor before it got too out of hand: "that rumor is not true in regard to Blizzard...We (Blizzard) believe that the rumor circulating about this subject is based on a misinterpretation of information provided to industry analysts. [We] do not currently have any MMO development plans beyond the upcoming expansion for World of Warcraft, and furthermore, we don’t have any intentions to focus on only one genre or platform with our future games.”
