Playstation Home Beta Site Up

Sony’s announcement of Playstation Home really was the biggest thing this entire GDC week, and now, the Playstation Beta site is up and running…and that’s pretty much all it could do right now. Just sit there and look pretty.
As of this writing, there’s no official entry form, no “click here to register” link, not even something that will take your email address to inform you when the site goes live in the future. All we get is a, “Keep checking back on this site to register an interest in taking part in an exclusive closed Beta Trial of Homeâ„¢”.
If you want to bookmark the site and check on it daily like a 14 year old girl checks her cell phone in hopes that the 20 year old she slept with will call her again, then by all means, follow the link.

Now? No. I don’t think so, but I’ll seriously debate if I should get it or not when Warhawk comes out

I’m getting a PS3 for Little Big Planet and Home will be an extra thing for me. If it’s Free, it’s for Me.

This does look pretty awesome to me, as long as Sony gets out some games that are worth owning soon a PS3 will be worth owning. It looks like a neat feature, especially for more casual gamers. Unfortunately, their pricetag isn’t “casual” enough.

This is almost as cool as when Sony stole vibration and analog sticks from Nintendo.
March 9th, 2007 at 2:30 pm
Stole analog sticks from Nintendo? The first console that introduced the analog stick for Nintendo was the N64. That came out in June 23, 1996. The Playstation came out one year ealier on September 1, 1995.
.
So how did Playstation steal the analog stick from Nintendo?

BB: The Dual Shock controller wasn’t introduced until 1997, and didn’t come out in the states until Summer of 1998.

Oooooohhhhhh yea. I honestly forgot that the original PS controller was just a regular gamepad. Wow, that was so long ago… haha

Do you honestly think that Home and Little Big Planet will be a big hit. Maybe i am a Sony hater but XBOX and Nintendo are currently working on title to counter Sony’s upcoming titles. Some may work and some may not. We will just have to wait and see.
March 9th, 2007 at 4:38 pm
I honestly do think Home will be an immense hit, if we can filter out the 10 year olds running around screaming like idiots. The concept of being able to hang out with your friends in a virtual space will be very appealing to gamers. And since it’s made by Sony, I’m sure there will be a lot of special guests popping in to the Home world where we can all listen in on a discussion (just like how Second Life is doing)
.
Little Big Planet won’t be as big as a smash hit just for the fact that it’s a simple kind of game. But, it will be a hit to casual gamers.

I think “stealing” an analog controller is impossible. Arcades had analog controllers didn’t they? Maybe stealing the idea to use it on a console is a valid argument. Regardles the PS1s duel shock kicked the crap out of any one analog stick controllers.
March 9th, 2007 at 7:16 pm
if u want to get technical about it, the first analog controller for a home system was in 1978 by a company called Interton.
March 9th, 2007 at 7:18 pm
What a lot of people do not understand is that analog is simply a form of the joystick.
Home will be a huge hit. It’s not for everyone, but it will be big for a lot of people. The thing I like about it is that Sony has gone for something different than Microsoft and Nintendo.

Well im a big PS3 doubter but Home has really peaked in intrest.
Its not going to convince me to save up for a PS3 but it sure it interesting. Of course theres nothing to stop Microsoft from doing their own version other than the fact not all 360s have hard drives.
I still do not think the trophy idea matches quite with achievements. Its cooler for showing off to your friends but it still needs an easier more practical way to compare your trophies than in a 3d environment.
Probably by biggest doubt about Home though is the amount of bandwidth it will require. The fastest DSL I can get doesnt have enough for good resolution video streaming and even streaming mp3s will max out as a couple of users unless they are rebroadcasted by Sony servers. Also technically streaming copyrighted music and videos to your friends is illegal. Internet radio stations lost lawsuits and had to pay a broadcast license to do it, how will Sony handle that? Limit how many people can be in your apartment at the same time?
It shows a lot of potential and I like the idea but in actual real-world usage im not entirely sure its going to work.
I can see Sony are making a HUGE effort to better Xbox Live though and that IS a good thing. For now, Xbox Live is fine for me but I will be keeping my eye on Home for sure when it launches.

I have to agree with most of that. At this point even with Home, the PS3 is not a logical choice for the typical consumer. My own prediction is that they will catch up to Xbox by 2008.

Home is a cool nifty thing to do when you just don’t want to play any serious games. Good for clan meetings and such too, if you think about it.
March 10th, 2007 at 7:37 am
Lee.. it would be a good place for clan meetings or just a place to take a break inbetween gaming sessions.

We’ll see how it goes…. but I just know people’s personal spaces are going to be nothing but porn. ;/

It would be really cool if they could let you access all your personal data anywhere, from your PSP. I think it’s in the works!
