NPD to stop sharing monthly console sales numbers

NPD, which for the past several years have been the primary (and favorite) fuel for fanboys ’round the world, will be cutting back drastically on its shared information starting with the October figures. Previously, NPD has been the primary source for monthly console sales and the top ten games for the month, but soon that will be coming to an end as NPD will cut back the monthly top selling games from ten to five, and will eliminate the monthly console sales figures in their entirety.
Now, NPD isn’t going to stop the console figures in their entirety — they are expected to be released on either a quarterly or annual basis. According to N’Gai Croal (my own personal God) at Newsweek, this may very well only be a temporary action on the part of the NPD Group, but for now this is where things stand.
On a personal note, I am torn. On one hand, I love knowing the sales figures for the consoles because it keeps me well informed as to trends inside the industry. On the other hand… it’ll shut those fanboys up. Which is always excellent.
