Nintendo To Activate News Channel on Saturday

Wii owners have been biting their nails in pure anticipation for the News Channel to go live. Many a Wii owner has been completely out of the loop on all of the current news. Well, all that is going to change on Saturday. Nintendo has announced that they will activate the News Channel on Jan 28. The news will come straight from the AP, who has a 2 year exclusive deal to supply Wii owners with the most up-to-date news.
How important is the news channel really? I personally would not be using it too often, but I’m sure non-gamers will find this as another reason to be on their Wii. And it’s really a comfort thing too. Instead of watching TV and listening to what CNN is reporting at the moment, people can turn on their Wiis and browse the news channel in the comfort of their living room.
This also marks the final piece to the Wii Channel puzzle that was promised at launch. So from here on in no one knows what other channels are planned, I’m personally hoping there is some kind of channel that acts as a buddy list so we can chat with our friends.
So rejoice, because the next time you actually leave your home to pick up necessities (you know, games or food), you could actually interact with people on what’s going on in the world thanks to the News Channel.

I really like the idea of the buddy list channel but maybe they can have a game channel! Maybe Nintendo Power should have a channel online:D

OK, to clarify, I think you meant a television game channel. The way you said just game channel just blew my mind. Television game channel.

I think the news/weather channels are cruicial, but don’t seem that way on face value.
Us bloggers, readers, gamers, we don’t generally care about these things–there are far better resources that just a single AP feed and a basic weather forecast.
However, these channels can ease casual users into the concept of a home media center. Much like Microsoft is doing with the Xbox, but from a different angle.
Also, it’s nice to have news/weather available when Wii Sports tells you to take a break.
