New Team Fortress 2 Details Emerge

German gaming site PC Action scored new tidbits on the upcoming Team Fortress 2 (which will be part of the Half-Life 2: Orange Box / Black Box release). The loose translation of the article was put on the Valve forums.
One detail that’s rather interesting and would be great to have is the idea of having cross-platform play between Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. Valve states that it’s technically feasible, but the chance of it coming to fruition all depend on Microsoft and Sony.
Check back after the break for the complete details.
Here’s a loose translation of the essential information from that site:
General
* There won’t be “normal” grenades anymore. Valve thinks that they unify the different classes too much.
* Unlike in Fortress Forever, teleporters are kept in Team Fortress 2. The ammo dispenser will make a comeback as well.
* There will be a personalized statistics system. For example, you could see an in-game message like “Hey, you’ve never played your class as well as today - keep it up!”
* Valve thinks that classes in other games are a joke. “Where’s the difference between me choosing a M16 or an AK-47 rifle?”, asks Robin Walker.
* It would be technically feasible to let owners of a PC, XBOX 360 and PS3 play against each other. Whether this feature makes it into the final game is still uncertain and depends on Sony and Microsoft.
* Valve received very few threatening letters because of TF2’s comic design.
* Owners of multicore processors will get additional, undisclosed, graphics details.
Classes
* The Scout can perform a double jump, as known from the Unreal games. That is, he’ll be able to jump a second time while in the air.
* The Medic can heal team members from long distances, as long as they are in sight. Furthermore, he can make himself and his patients invulnerable for 10 seconds.
* Every class has a unique close-combat weapon. Even the secondary weapons differ from each other often times. Following is a list of classes with their primary, secondary and close-combat weapons:
* Scout: Shotgun, pistol, baseball bat.
* Soldier: Rocket launcher, shotgun, shovel.
* Pyro: Flamethrower, shotgun, fire axe.
* Demo Man: Sticky bomb slingshot, grenade thrower, broken bottle.
* Heavy Weapons Guy: Machine gun (mini gun), shotgun, fists.
* Engineer: Shotgun, pistol, wrench.
* Medic: Machine pistol, healing ray, bone saw.
* Sniper: Sniper rifle, machine pistol, club.
* Spy: Revolver, cigar case (PDA for switching your disguise), knife.Maps & Gameplay
* Apart from 2Fort, there’ll be a remake of Well.
* There will be completely new maps for the game mode “Territorial Control”. It will be randomly decided which area of a map is supposed to be conquered and the team in possession of that area will assume the role of defenders.
* There will be trains rolling through the map Well, which should be avoided by players.
* Capture The Flag becomes Capture The Documents. Instead of capturing a flag, you’ll have to capture a briefcase from the opponent’s base.

Is that a screen from the game? It looks so Incredibles-esque. And I liked the Incredibles kinda so that’s not a bad thing. I can’t wait to see a gameplay video of the Orange Box

Yep, gamers were either completely loving the look or hating it and threatening Valve. I personally love it because I have always liked Team Fortress because it never took itself serious. For example, calling for a medic (which I recall was the “Z” button) had you literally yelling “Medic!” and “Excuse me, I’m in need of a Medic!” and you don’t know how fun it was to hear that. Also, the idea of having the medic holding a health pack as a weapon and simply pushing it forward to either heal an ally or “poisoning” an enemy was awesome!
.
One thing I really hope follows through is the idea of playing with Xbox 360, PS3, and PC players online. I’d love to finally be able to play with my brother, who owns a PS3.

I think we can give them a couple of years before the whole cross platforming online play goes live…

Yeah, multiplatform online play is something I’ve been waiting for in a game, any game. This is especially a nice time to have it seeing as to how hard it is to get all 3 systems for the majority of the people. This would be real nice… let’s hope Microsoft & Sony don’t get too greedy here.

You know how awesome it would be to play Halo 2 with a guy on a PC. Or when Gears of War gets released on PC having an online battle with a 360 owner. It looks like it is not to far from becoming a reality.

I think that it would be awesome to be able to play cross platform (PS3, PC, Xbox 360) on a game that emphasizes teamwork such as team fortress. If this game gaines the support of microsoft and sony and it is able to ave cross-platform play, maybe PS3 owners and 360 owners will be able to play together in more titles in the future?

Really excited for this…. Although the heal-from-afar medic thing has unbalance issues. All we need is for 1 HW guy and team of medics to follow him around. Hopefully it’s not overpowered..

I’m waiting for a Grand Theft Auto MMO game with multiplatform play. That will be the day I can die happy. That, or the day I meet Rashida Jones. Mmmm Karen.

The closest thing to that is the multiplayer in saints row. It’s actually pretty fun.

Sounds really cool. Multi-platform would be badass. I hope microsoft and sony go for this. Seeing some cooperation between opposing companies for the good of all gaming would be nice.

Quick question; Will there be any service charges/fees/whatever to play this one online, for pc users? Please, let this be good news.
