MSNBC: ‘Madden’, ‘Halo 3′, ‘Pac-Man’ most over-hyped games EVER!

So, MSNBC (my favorite news network) has a feature on their website regarding the top five over-hyped games. After reading the list, I found myself taking exception to every game listed being considered ‘over-hyped’.
So, after the break I’m going to break down every game on the list, and why it’s not over-hyped… except Halo 3. I can’t defend a game that’s had its face plastered on fast food. I’m sorry.
First off, if you want to make an argument about Madden being overhyped, you have to look at the Madden games from about 2000 onward. The only real publicity I see Madden getting anymore is from the yearly ESPN expose on the “Madden curse”. Other than that, all I’ve seen is a stray commercial on G4, and SpikeTV’s coverage of the launch.
Even if I DO want to see Vince Young get hit by a train, but that’s neither here or there.
So what if their advertising campaign has been turned into a source of parody for the past decade? “John Romero’s about to make you his bitch” is one of the best slogans in the history of video games. It’s just a shame that it was attached to such a shit-tacular game. If it had been “Shigeru Miyamoto’s about to make you his bitch”, Super Mario Sunshine would’ve sold ten million units. Guaranteed.
Enter the Matrix is a victim of the hype that surrounded the movie it was tied to, ‘The Matrix Reloaded’. They both equally blew. If the film had been great, the hype for the game would have been justified, but alas… trying to turn a single film into a trilogy that is basically an overly cinematic metaphor for a system reboot just didn’t get people in the theatres.
You can make the case that Pac-Man was overhyped, but you have to keep one thing in mind: Without Pac-Man, video gaming as we know it doesn’t exist. Plain, and simple. So, considering that I owe my job here to Pac-Man, and every Halo 3 fan owes their fanboyness to Pac-Man, and every developer, publisher, fanboy, fangirl, and Buckner & Garcia owes Pac-Man some form of gratitude.
…ok, screw it, I’ll defend Halo 3, too. Those Game Fuel commercials? Hilarious. Those Believe commercials? Inspirational and artistic. Halo 3? Effing awesome. There.
