Microsoft misses goal…barely

Before Microsoft had even released the first Xbox 360s to the public, it already had high hopes in mind for their second entry into the harsh world of the home console business. Initially, the big wigs at Microsoft boasted that they expected between 13 and 15 million units to be shipped by June 30, 2007. A lofty goal to be sure, and sure enough, as time progressed Microsoft was forced to scale back their earlier prediction to a slightly lower goal of 12 million units by the same date.
Well, June 30, 2007 has come and gone and in an statement this morning Microsoft confirmed missing their target by a measly 400,000 units. Although missing the 12 million mark, Microsoft execs are extremely pleased with the performance of the Xbox 360 thus far, and are even more excited about what the near future holds for their console.
And what’s more, with the success of the 360 around the globe, Microsoft has also stated that they fully expect the Xbox and Entertainment Devices division of Microsoft to finally begin turning a profit for fiscal year 2008; the first time the division will turn a profit since the launch of the original Xbox in 2001.
