Microsoft and Toshiba sitting in a tree, putting HD in your 360

…I apologize for the bad rhyming… Microsoft and Toshiba have teamed up to develop a Xbox 360 console with a larger hard drive and built-in HD-DVD support, Smart House reports.
According to the article, the new SKU (or new console?) is being developed in response to the success of Blu-Ray, and the PS3’s impact on the format’s success. It is no secret that the stand-alone HD-DVD drive is about as popular as cancer, so this move seems like the logical (if not late) next step for Microsoft.
However, one of the more interesting points being speculated in the article is the inclusion of a 17-pin iPod port. I think it goes without saying that the inclusion of such a thing would make the Xbox 360 much more appealing to the home entertainment crowd.
We can expect this new SKU sometime in late 2008 (around Star Trek time), or at the 2009 Consumer Electronic Show in Vegas. I can hardly wait.

If this article is even remotely true late 2008, early 2009 is too late for built-in HD DVD.
And seriously, a 17-pin iPod port? Where would you even put that on the 360 in order to mount the iPod? It’s already got USB to plug an iPod into.
