Market to go “hardcore” this holiday?

I think it goes without saying that the Wii is popular. It’s being credited with bringing the soccer mom crowd into the gaming circle, and expanding the industry’s audience. Sure, fine, that’s all well and good, but according to Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey, that won’t be enough this holiday season.
Hickey, in an investor note for famed developer eater Electronic Arts, has stated his belief that the market focus could very well make a shift from the understocked Wii to the Xbox 360.
We believe the recent release of killer content, lower hardware price points, and limited Wii supply could shift market focus from Wii casual to 360 hardcore this holiday
So why would this little nugget of info be in an investor note for EA? Simple: EA develops more for the PS3 and 360 than they do the Wii, and seeing a market shift to either console means a big pay day for publishing Goliath. Oh, and what is a story about EA nowadays without some mention of their recent take-over of BioWare and Pandemic? Hickey chimes in on that as well, saying…
We are cautiously optimistic over their recent acquisition of BioWare/Pandemic development studios, although considerably less positive on the Bio-Pan IRR potential despite speculation BioWare’s unannounced MMO will be a Star Wars licensed release…
The MMO segment has received considerable investment after the smashing success of WoW and the subsequent annuity stream it has unleashed. However, aside from international markets, the genre’s success domestically has been limited to WoW, in our view.
As a final party pooper, Hickey reminded investors that MMOs and single-player RPG titles are entirely different projects, and that BioWare has absolutely zero experience with the former.

And what about Guild Wars? Or Everquest? Or any of the other MMOs still making bank?
