Iowa Lawmakers Playing Video Games During Debates
DES MOINES — Bill Heckroth knew he had much to learn in his first term as a state senator — but he didn’t expect solitaire strategies would be among them.
The Democratic senator from Waverly is concerned that too many people are using their state-issued laptops to play video games during debate — a practice he says is too clear to anyone watching from the gallery above the floor.
I agree that they probably shouldn’t be playing games during debates, but I find the story interesting. It makes me wonder if the same thing is happening in Washington on the federal level. Either way, it shows that games have simply become a part of our society on all levels. Of course, they are probably playing simple stuff like Solitaire and Spades. If they caught one playing Wow during sessions, that would be a story.
‘‘Freshmen are always shocked by what goes on,’’ says Senate Minority Leader Mary Lundby, R-Marion, a 21-year Statehouse veteran and occasional video gamer. ‘‘Next year he won’t even mention it. He’ll probably be playing games.’’
