GDC ‘07: Sony Releases Playstation Home Video
Wow…I am utterly speechless. This video has turned my view on the PS3 as being a “I’ll get it whenever” to a “I gotta have it!”.
There have been many rumors and speculations on what the Playstation Home will do, but this video does the best job describing what can be done with Playstation Home because it’s straight from Sony’s mouth. You can totally configure yourself in the virtual world, you also have a home that you can decorate and invite friends over, and much more.
After watching the video, I believe that as long as your friends are connected to the Playstation 3 network, there really is no reason why you ever have to leave your house. You and your friends can just hang out and talk either through keyboard or bluetooth headset, you can visit a virtual arcade and play some classic games, even go to a virtual movie theater and catch a movie. This really is ground-breaking and I can’t wait to experience it when it’s released this fall.

Um… wasn’t this called The Sims?
March 7th, 2007 at 2:23 pm
Yea, pretty much Paul, but there’s no “go to bathoom” or “eat” commands, it’s just you in a virtual world

I’ll admit this is kind of neat, but I’d rather chill out with friends in r/l or play games online with them, not pretend dance in a fake apartment.

Whaaaaaaat? Pretend dancing is the bomb! Especially when I got a sweet sword trophy from achieving something in FFXIII on my coffee table

this is one more step towards the matrix… i like it.

I also think this is a huge step convincing me to look into picking up a PS3 console in the near future.

I saw that you will be able to decorate your personal apartment with photos which is kind of cool for me. I could upload my art and photography and have virtual art shows or something.. I agree with Paul that this is kind of like the Sims… but this looks like Sims for grown ups.

This really will change the way you game.
Can you imagine traveling to a virtual theater and catching to see what playing, all from the comfort of your couch.

It would also be great if they can manipulate your virtual weather with the real weather in your real town? You can benefit from singing in the rain, without catching a cold. GENIUS!

Is this sort of neat? Yes. Is it enough to make me want to unload 600 bucks, plus tax? Hell no. Why in the hell would I want to go to a virtual theater? Why not go to a real one? Decorate an apartment with pictures? I can do that for real! You guys don’t have me really convinced on this one. Maybe this would be cool if I could… I dunno… get in a car and run over other ps3 owners or something.

I agree with you Paul to a certain extent. I stated in the article that this changed my decision from the PS3 being a “I’ll get it whenever” to a “I gotta have it” because by the time this comes out (Fall), the PS3 will probably have a good amount of exclusive games that are good enough to warrant a purchase. Plus, in a couple of months (early 2008), FFXIII will come out and those 3 things together has got me sold on the PS3.

That is freaking amazing! I see why you insisted I watched this! It really 1uped the Nintendo Wii’s Miis! Now perhaps I can finally have the character look like me. With my mii I could not even find a long hairstyle. I love that you can design your home as well I can do all I want with that house and the space other than my small apt and that is exciting! Maybe our friends would come over more in that world! I love it this really would make me buy the ps3 it looks like a sim world! Great article!

I think the decorating and all will hit home with women though and gay men Paul:) Think about it!Do not forget the metros!

lol BB… you really don’t have a choice if you should get one or not anyway… I mean you run a video game blog. hehe

Paul, that’s true in a way.. my neighbor has a PS3 so i always use heres instead of buying one myself lol.. but i’ll have to get one myself anyway no matter what

The problem with Home is that, while it’s cool, but it doesn’t really address any of the issues currently hurting PSN. I do not think Sony understands why people actually LIKE using Live. It’s certainly not for things like this. Meanwhile other issues go unspoken of, things that harm the core online gaming experience.
I think it’s a neat idea and I’d like to mess around in it, but it almost just amounts to a version of Second Life. I just don’t find it that exciting from a gaming point of view. It adds yet another obstacle in getting games going with your friends.

As for Miis, I don’t know. Surely this is comparable… but I feel like it has a much different point than either the Mii system alone or Live itself. It’s almost in a different universe. Not necessarily better per se, but going for something else entirely.

in the end, the PS3 just needs a game library. We’ll probably see a massive increase in PS3 sales by winter. I really think Xbox 360 is the top right now, but they don’t seem to be doing a whole lot to stay there.
Let’s say PS3 has a big price drop, which it probably will in the future.. that could also be the difference. If the PS3 were $400 right now it would be a great buy.
