Doubts raised of Wii’s Staying Power by Sega VP
“I am a little concerned about the creative depth of the Wii pool” said Scott Steinberg, VP of marketing for Sega’s US division. “I’m not sure if they will top out in 2008 or 2007. The Wii will start to look really dated in a couple years when developers get more value from the 360 and learn more and more about the PlayStation 3.” Remarked Steinberg, the VP of Sega
With the current climate of Wii shortages and soft PS3 sales, backing the dark horse seems to be an unusual call for Sega. In the article Steinberg is firm about his company’s belief in the PS3’s eventual victory.
“We know the PS3 pool is pretty deep,” elaborated Steinberg. “There’s a lot to exploit there.”
“But how much value can developers and creative folks get out of [the Wii's] wrist motion two years from now, or 5 years from now, or 10 years from now? How can they design products that aren’t too derivative of what’s already out there?”
With tough talk like that coming out of Sega’s Marketing guys we better not be seeing any of that ‘derivative wrist motion’ when those games launch — then again, who better to give a lecture on fading staying power than the guys who brought you Shadow the Hedgehog?
Both Ghost Squad and Mario and Sonic are due for release later this year.
