Black 120 GB + HDMI Xbox 360 Confirmed?
My friends over at GamersReports.com is reporting one hell of a story. Basically, their inside source gave them a tip that Microsoft Australia told Myer (think Target, but in Australia) to prepare the store for a Black 360 with a 120GB hard drive in April.
Well day 2 of product knowledge today (Brisbane, Australia) featured Microsoft themselves and it’s now 100% official that the Black 360, (with black controller), 120gb hard drive and HDMI is due out in Australia for $749 AU in April. They will try to push this forward to late March to deter buyers from the March 23 PS3 launch.
Now you see why I had to write about this? This is one hell of a rumor. The one thing I’m concerned with is why would Microsoft alert Australian stores 3 months before the new console would arrive there. Shouldn’t they alert them maybe 1 month before or so? I mean, I don’t know anything about the retail business, but I think 3 months notice is a little long.
What do you guys think of this rumor?

[...] It’s Black. It’s got a 120 GB Hard Drive. It supports HDMI. February 7th, 2007 by J.W. Oh, Microsoft… you bastards. Through 1pstart, I came across this GamersReports.com According to GamersReports: Just yesterday our inside source gave us a tip that Microsoft Australia has told a store named Myer to prepare the store for a Black 360 with a 120GB hard drive in April. Hopefully we see this good news sometime in Europe and USA. Should you take it as a grain of salt or not, whats your thoughts? [...]

I’d hate to rain on everyone’s parade, but it’s pretty obvious that this rumor is dead in the water.
1. Why would this come out in Austrailia of all places BEFORE the US? We got the system a good 5 months before they did.
2. Microsoft has already said that while they have tinkered with ideas of such expanded functionality of the 360, no such device is planned for production anytime soon.
3. The only recent hardware changes to the 360 is its new BenQ DVD drive.
In short: not happening. If any territory got this in the near future it would be the US.

As far as giving retailers a really long time before hand to know about something like this, its entirely plausable. I “work” for a marketing research company that deals with retailers, and it is a REALLY big deal to get some shelf space… Your mind would explode if you knew how much it costs to launch something as simple as canned tuna and get some space on the shelves for it.
Don’t know if the rest of the rumor is plausable. I hope not, I just got my 360 a month ago..

GREAT Point Scantronman. If a March debut was possible I think we would have heard about this during PS3’s release. Bill aint that dumb, I’m sure he wants people to forget about the PS3.
To those new X360 owners out there, you won’t have to return your newly “broken” x360 for this upgrade. Aint happening!
X360 has only been out for a little over a year now, and you guys still aren’t satisfied?
I love how all the confident X360 owners, who stand by their hardware during PS3 launch, now buckle when a new color comes out. Come on people… be consistant!!!
February 7th, 2007 at 9:20 pm
Personally, I could care less if it’s black. I actually like the current color of the Xbox.. it matches my printer and my computer. The larger hard drive would be nice in a way, but who really needs that much space if you already have a computer. I have a real issue with the video game industry and how they are trying to make all the systems an all-in-one deal. People like me just want to play games. I don’t want to watch movies on my game system or run an operating system on it. That’s why I spent thousands of dollars on my computer setup.

“I love how all the confident X360 owners, who stand by their hardware during PS3 launch, now buckle when a new color comes out. Come on people… be consistant!!!” I never stood by anything. I can’t afford a ps3…
Kezins right on!

I never understood the whole fascination with colors anyway. I remember back in the day when a white Game Gear came out and people were paying 100-200 dollars extra just for the novelty of having a unique color.
I understand with cars and houses…important stuff, but a game system is a game system to me. If it plays the games, i wouldn’t care if it was pink.

OMG this would be so cool. i want this now, i’ll pay, i’ll pay.
Hurry and release it allready.
I’ll trade my old one for this one, i’ve been waiting for HDMI for ages.
Please make an official announcement soon.

All I know is that Microsoft went from denying the rumors to answering “we at this time feel we should not reply to rumors of any kind”. Fishy? I think so!
March 20th, 2007 at 8:01 am
It’s the hotness. Tho I don’t see why everyone gets so excited. With a few face plates and graphix stickers, (available at any gamestop) you can have the same effect.
March 20th, 2007 at 8:57 am
I have to admit much of my excitement is due to the black case, but it’s a lot about the huge HD & the HDMI too. South Park episodes in HD are 1GB a piece, and XBL is getting a looooot of videos so I’m sure an upgrade to 120GB can’t hurt too badly for Microsoft.
March 20th, 2007 at 9:55 am
I suppose the HDMI makes a difference. Not to me tho, as I’m still stuck in the age of standard definition TVs.
March 20th, 2007 at 10:19 am
Ever since I got an HD for my birthday, I’ve been wanting to check out Xbox 360, but once I saw the rumors about this one with the HDMI I’ve been holding out for a while to buy it in case it comes out forreal.
March 20th, 2007 at 11:03 am
[...] It seems all of the rumors and leaked pictures were true. Microsoft will be supplying a a new Xbox 360 that’s bigger, badder, and just downright more appealing than the current Xbox 360. Here are the upgraded specs of the system: [...]

HDMI probably won’t have as big of an impact as people say it will.

O.K. Scantroman that sounds reasonable at first, but think about it, micrisift didn’t announce it anywhere, it is just that australian stores were the first to see the change because microsoft wanted the australian xbox 360 launch to coincide with the PS3 launch,(which is an absolutely brilliant strategy and will more than likely work, and may even be the demise of the PS3) and if you have been paying attention to the rumors, gamecrazy stores in america have already announced that the black xbox 360 (which was originally codenamed “zephyr” by microsoft) has been entered into their computer systems with a sale price of $479.99 and the 120gb hard drive WILL be available separately for around $119.99 it is estimated to be available by may 1st though they might even launch sooner, and i imagine it will be hard to get one, but not as bad as the first launch since almost all of microsofts manufacturing resources have gone into making sure that they are ready with millions of systems in every country that they are being brought into. no word about the launch coming to the “E.U”, or the “U.K.”, or whatever seemingly arbitrary acronym they are currently using in europe.
March 25th, 2007 at 2:17 pm
Man it looks nice and all but I don’t think re-releasing it would really make a difference.
March 25th, 2007 at 3:53 pm
It will be hard to get one… it’s not a permanent Xbox. The Xbox 360 Elite (the black Xbox) is limited edition. Once they’re sold out, that’s it. No second shipment. What will happen after that is the premium will get an upgrade including the HDMI + better cooling, but they’ll remain white. Be prepared folks, the same eBay bastards who didn’t let current PS3 owners get theirs on the launch day will be there for this new Xbox.
March 27th, 2007 at 12:42 pm
We will never be satisfied and upgrades are inevitable…
