BioShock Wins Game of the Year - Full VGA Winners List

I am honestly *slightly* shocked that BioShock, as beautiful game as it was, has turned out to be the winner in this years Video Game Awards. Despite my little personal issues with BioShock, I am happy that it managed to beat out Halo 3 (aka Halo 2.5). It is amusing that I have no intention of watching the show nor do I even know what channel Spike TV comes on with my cable, but I do love lists, and the final list of winners is out on CNN via PR Newswire (before the show has aired! Which is tomorrow December 9th at 9pm btw). Full list after the break.

Overall, not a shabby list of games. I am glad to see Rock Band beat out Guitar Hero, I think Call of Duty 4 EASILY beats out Halo 3’s multiplayer, but you can’t beat a game that had its own Slurpee cup, and though I think it is a little early for Mass Effect to get an award, they didn’t have much competition in the RPG department. Click here if you want to see who the full list of nominees were.

Man with wrench opposed to mario galaxy or mass effect? best game of the year my ass.
and why is there a f**king EA game in there, just proves they don’t know sh*t, EA games should be banned from all awards, oh wait they own most companies now…can’t wait for halflife dumbed down pro street carbon 2008 for morons edition.
thought Halo3 would have won most overyped, dissapointing game of all time.
December 9th, 2007 at 2:13 am
Fueled by Dew? Halo 3 didn’t get enough awards, so they made up a category just for it?
December 9th, 2007 at 2:17 am
Haha, yeah. Fueled by dew. Way to have to make a category so Bungie wouldn’t be butthurt.
December 9th, 2007 at 2:28 am
‘Game fueled by Dew’ thing is pretty stupid, but I’m curious though, do you (PacoDG) suck at Halo?
December 9th, 2007 at 2:41 am
Yeah I didn’t think Bioshock would get GotY, but some people have said it was released to late to be included in this years awards or something like that.
One thing for sure, I am glad as shit halo only got one real award, which should have been given to CoD4 cause halo 3 multi player is nothing but a kind of better looking halo 2. CoD4 has so much depth and different setups and things you can do online, and OMG I cannot believe halo got that one.
I left the H’s uncapitalized for a reason lol.
December 9th, 2007 at 2:58 am
Glad to see people getting the truth about halo3. It feels so much better not 2 hav it in the winners list.
December 9th, 2007 at 3:32 am
Keep in mind that with Halo 3, it isn’t just versus mode on-line… you have forge mode, theater mode, 4 player co-op (with drastically different experiences based on what skulls are activated) as well as one of the most comprehensive set of variables adjustable for maps and game types ever seen outside of modded PC software (which normally requires lots of coding experience).
You don’t use all of that stuff in Halo 3? So what! Plenty of other people do, making it far more accessible. For straight-up, ranked versus-mode, CoD4 definitely has an edge, it’s just nowhere near as robust as Halo 3 when it comes to the full multi-player feature set.
I must say, what the hell is up with that Dew category? Reminds me of those Taco Bell playbacks =P
December 9th, 2007 at 3:46 am
good list, even though halo is way over hyped and has been on a downward spiral since the first one, it does deserve best multiplayer, it has way more customization and depth than CoD4 -FORGE. don’t bash on halo just because you suck at it. that self endorsed mountain dew/microsoft marketing ploy was bullshit though
December 9th, 2007 at 4:43 am
This list is about 80% crap… Sadly, we don’t have a gaming media - it’s all just advertisements in the disguise of journalism - much like Game Informer. YOU JUST GOTTA BUY THIS! Ok well that game wasn’t so great. WELL THIS NEXT one though, THIS is the one you GOTTA HAVE! Support independent developers and let’s start looking for an independent game journal!
December 9th, 2007 at 6:52 am
With all do respect to Bioshock , Mario Galaxy is the GOTY this year
December 9th, 2007 at 10:06 am
its kinda funny how everyone on here is bashing Halo3 on here when its the most popular game out of everything mentioned. just look how many people play the multiplayer every single day. And just look at how many people bought it first day.
it is a great game with huge amounts of people who LOVE it.
now that being said .. i am not the biggest halo fan myself. i think mass effect deserved game of the year no doubt! Halo 3 gets best multiplayer. CoD4 gets best military and gameplay. bioshock could have gotten best shooter or action game. i dont think bioshock deserved game of the year tho
December 9th, 2007 at 10:37 am
Just more proof that we will find any excuse to use that damn picture, won’t we Paco? :p
December 9th, 2007 at 10:43 am
congrats to bioshock. and good to see call of duty 4 get some love. if it were me, i could have voted NCAA 08 over madden.
December 9th, 2007 at 10:56 am
JW: haha, dude, you know it is my pride and joy. I can only pray that they make a BioShock 2 so I can continue to use it.
December 9th, 2007 at 11:05 am
Just to let you know, Valve’s orange box sold about 60,000 more copies than halo 3 did in the first week. IMO, woopie halo 3 has customizable multi player options. There are still only two techniques to the game: camp or don’t camp. Even though Team Fortress 2 doesn’t have very many maps or game play, it more that makes up for it because you actually have to have teamwork, tactics, and skill to be able to win a match. Bioshock was a magnificent game though.
December 9th, 2007 at 11:25 am
Bioshock was good, but not quite a GOTY. CoD 4 deserves that title more than any game on the list, and at least deserves to beat out Halo 3 for best MP. Mass Effect was one of the most dissapointing games I’ve played all year, and doesn’t deserve to win any awards in my book, especially not this early on. I’m also surprised the Orange Box isn’t on the list more, but the novelty of Portal did wear off pretty quickly. And for the user above, TF2 is not as good as Halo 3 and Halo 3 does require skill if you play in the higher ranked games. I think if Valve stuck with the Team Fortress Classic formula, the game would have been MUCH better. All in all, though, an AMAZING year for video games, can’t wait to try Super Mario Galaxy this Christmas!

BREAKTHROUGH TECHNOLOGY
The Orange Box/ Portal (Valve/ Valve)
Am I the only one who think’s this is terrible?
How is a modified gravity gun and a funny plot breakthrough technology? It was real good fun to play, but Assassins Creed or Mass Effect deserves it more.

Assassin’s creed isn’t something that is too new. Prince of Persia anyone? I haven’t heard much on mass effect. Portal, imo, is “breakthrough technology” (bad way of saying it) because it is a new idea, a new way of playing the game. novelty of the game lasts until someone tells you to turn the song off because they got ambushed by a sentry gun

Bioshock was a terrific game, but I can’t believe God Of War 2 didn’t make it onto any lists. It has gameplay mechanics and graphics that would put most next gen efforts to shame. Orange Box was very good.

BioShock was a sub-par game. It was original, but poorly executed. I got burnt out on it before I even beat it.
There’s not even a story to the game, besides this brief pre-game backstory you learn about.

Well arent you a fucking idiot. Bioshock is ALL story, if you’d bothered giving it a chance.
December 9th, 2007 at 11:12 pm
Cmon, seriously Bioshock gets game of the year. I personally would have given it to Halo 3, and I know not everyone agrees with that, but surly you would all agree that Bioshock is not game of the year material. You run around and bop things on the head with a wrench, I feel like mario just got mad and ran around hitting things. At least Halo 3 had new innovative features, like saved films, Forge, File Share, not to mention all the cool things that come with having a Bungie.net account, but then again people wouldn’t know that if they don’t have xbox live because you get virtually only half of the game. Bioshock didn’t even have a multiplayer half, so to me (a person who only plays games for online multiplayer because thats all that really matters)Bioshock was only half of a video game.

GOTY should have gone to mario galaxy
December 10th, 2007 at 1:38 am
Game of the year should have gone to Call of Duty 4, but for some reason I’m a bit happy that it DIDN’T go to Halo 3. Although, I’m still shocked that Bioshock beat out CoD4.
Halo 3, like someone mentioned earlier, should have won “Most over-hyped game in the history of mankind!” I mean damn!? How many times do I have to see the words Halo 3? It’s on my burgers, my drinks, movie previews, and probably taped to my back. GET THE FUCK OFF!!!
At least CoD4 got best shooter, and military game.
The other categories have somewhat respectable winners, but the ones I mentioned are flawed.

HOLY GOD DAMN!
how many people bash halo 3 on this fucking site… seirously.
and bioschock is the most over-hyped game in the history OF games. I was bored after 2 hours of playing a NON-online game. no co-op. no multiplayer….. and HELLO IT’S A FUCKING RE-MAKE….. just with a different name….
halo has SOOO many things that no other games will have for YEARS. i mean are you guys retarded or just sucky halo players. the orange box DID NOT out sell anything EVER! i mean it includes to OLD games… why would it win…. and it’s just sad that bungie worked THAT hard on a game and to have faggots like you bash it just because you cannot play OR WAIT… BECAUSE IT’S POPULAR! jsut because EVERYONE plays it including frat guys and good looking girls you guys bash it… fucking pathetic.
FUCK the biast spike video game awards and fuck all of you for just bringing down gaming buy picking apart every good game that comes out.

Let’s stop being fanboys for a moment and think objectively.
Assassin’s Creed is, personally, a fantastic game, but it’s too repetitive. You can only collect flags and pickpocket construction workers so many times before you wonder why the developers didn’t think of more. It’s like they said, “Hitman did it four times and made a bundle, let’s put it in the Crusades!”
Mass Effect, although brilliantly scripted and implemented, is buggy. Get stuck in the scenery in the middle of a firefight and you’ll get my point.
Call of Duty 4 is a damn fine shooter, no argument. But it’s still nothing new. The concepts are pretty standard (although I dig the moral issues), and the gameplay, although polished, is no more exhilirating than any other tactical shooter. (”It’s a polished Tom Clancy game.”–my friend’s reaction during gameplay)
As for Halo, well, I love it. Unfortunately, the third installment did nothing new, with the exception of a couple of multiplayer modes and weapons. It’s too similar to Halo 2 to really be considered an advancement for the series. Furthermore, the story did not significantly flesh out the ending and left numerous plot holes. Pretty game, good premise, but just not groundbreaking, which is a killer for GotY.
As for BioShock, well, it’s got my vote. I know many people aren’t big fans of the game, but they’re not fans for the wrong reasons. The game set out to tell a story–the gameplay and mechanics are designed to support the story. Like “Shadow of the Colossus” on PS2, BioShock isn’t about beating the game. It’s about finishing the story and understanding what’s going on. The art direction and development is on par (or better, by some standards) than many Hollywood productions. It attempts to redefine what can be come in a video game, and many people believe it does so quite successfully. That’s big kudos for GotY.
Game of the Year isn’t a popularity contest, it’s an award given to a game that revolutionizes or advances gaming. Who cares if has the most people playing it at a given moment if it doesn’t do anything fresh and new? The GotY should be groundbreaking, something that most games (yes, Halo 3 included) never come close to doing. As such, it seems clear that the honors should go to BioShock or Super Mario Galaxy.
Oh, and Zachary, BioShock isn’t a remake. You should play System Shock 2 before you say things that totally destroy your credibility. Quit being a fanboy and try to enjoy gaming as a whole. Blowing a load for anything with Master Chief’s image on it is just embarrassing.
