Ballsy statement from SCEE
According to “semi-official” Sony blog site, Three Speech, SCEE president David Reeves claims that this upcoming holiday season is not “necessarily the most critical one” for Sony…Bwha??
Reeves goes on to state his belief that the Playstation 3’s popularity will hit like a tsunami; slowly building force in the beginning, becoming stronger and stronger as time goes on. He goes on to say that he thinks the critical holiday season for Sony will be Christmas 08, as opposed to this year’s quickly approaching holiday season.
This statement comes as a shock in my opinion, as Sony is currently getting dominated by both the Wii and Xbox 360 in just about every territory. Even in Japan, Sony’s home turf and a major market in their overall business plan, sales of the PS3 are extremely slow, to say the least.
If you ask me, this upcoming Christmas season is absolutely critical for Sony, because after all, if this holiday season goes badly for them, there might not even be a holiday 08 for the Playstation 3. Sure, that might be jumping the gun a little bit on my part, especially since Sony is willing to throw as much money as possible at the Playstation in order for it to succeed, but you still get my point. And while Sony’s collective wallet is pretty huge, they definitely don’t have unlimited resources to expel on this project. If Sony doesn’t move some SERIOUS amount of consoles this holiday season, they are in trouble; and I know I’m not the only one who sees that.
Sony’s software line up for the end of the year looks pretty decent right now, but with the price of the console going back up to 600 USD when the 80 gig hits next month, Sony definitely has their work cut out for them this holiday, whether David Reeves will admit it or not.
